Rhythm of Science faculty
In the early nineties, maybe you were not aware of this university. Maybe your brothers and sisters studied at this university. Maybe you noticed the university as you passed by. What was the image you had back then? The adornment of multicolored posters on the walls, the black flags. But not only that, the endless news flashes:
“The University of Colombo has closed.”
“Attacks on academic staff of the University of Colombo”
“Students on strike”
What is your image of the university, even though there is a blotted appearance from the outside. Once there were a group of people, who demolished the freethinking of the fresher, to impose their own ideas.
Infact, not being satisfied with the verbal abuse, these people went into the extent of physically harassing world renowned professors of the faculty.
In simple words, they were able to break the strong bond the academic staff had with the students, to gain their own political advantages.
When the students were undergoing this unbearable stress, and when the student leadership was ignoring its’ responsibilities, the standard of education of the faculty of science deteriorated.
With the honest intention of upgrading the blotted image of the Science faculty a group of students swam against tide of thuggery. This was the newly appointed student council who came to power on the 28th of May, 1993.
From that day onwards, the faculty of Science is thriving under the leadership of the student council. The trust that the students placed in the student council is evidence of this.
The main objective of the student council was to maintain the faculty independently, without any external political influences. For this reason, the student council of the faculty of science has withdrawn its’ involvement from the university student council. This was due to the disgracing manner in which the university student council acted during the 1994 general election, where the Peoples’ Alliance came to power.
Due to the disgraceful manner in which the Inter university student council acted during the 1997 provincial elections, he alliance between the student council and them was broken.
Thus, resisting political influence from the outside, the student council was able to bring the faculty of science to its’ golden age. From that day onwards, the multicolored posters and the black flags are slowly disappearing without any indication of any return.
The black letters verses were slowly erased from the walls. The bond between the students and the academic staff took a turn for the good side. The university premises became a pleasurable place for the students. News of the closure of the faculty vanished from the Television, Radio and the newspapers.
Through the turmoil that the student council went through, their main strength was the trust the students placed int hem. This trust grew as the years went by and never once deteriorated. Strengthened by the students’ trust, the student council carried out its’ obligations with diligence.
